At the end of this two-day tournament that covered five calendar days, Greg Himmelbrand (Queens, NY) was sitting behind all 72 million chips in play. The win earned him $243,630 and this is the poker pro's second six-figure cash of 2013.
Second place and $157,983 went to Luis Diaz, who was dead-last in chips when the final table began Thanks to an early double-up and busting Patrick Chan in 9th place, Luis cruised to a second-place finish. Luis works in a barber shop, but plays lots of tournaments when he can.
Simon Lam, another professional poker player, took third and $103,457.
This event kicked off the 2013 Borgata Fall Poker Open with a $1 million guarantee on total buy-ins and four starting flights over three days. They needed 2,000 entrants to make the guarantee and that hurdle was cleared with ease. The final tally was 2,899 entrants for total buy-ins of $1,449,500.
586 players survived the four starting flights and returned for day two. The chip leader was WSOP bracelet winner Jason Young (Suffern, NY). The final 250 players got paid and although he made the money, Jason did not crack the top 100, busting out early on day two.
Play continued until early Saturday morning until they finally reached the final table of ten after 5am. At that point they decided to extend the event to a third day and return at 2pm. George Alberto was the chip leader when the final table got underway, but he had a rough day and busted out in 7th place.
Greg Himmelbrand played Day 1B and actually busted out. He took advantage of the re-entry aspect of this event and fared much better on his second bullet. Despite being all-in and at-risk a couple of times, he managed to fade his opponents' outs. He says he played a 10-25 big blind stack for most of Day 1, being "patient" and "picking [his] spots" to make it through the day.
Greg will definitely be back for the Championship event, but hasn't yet decided what other preliminary events he might play.
