The first bounty tournament of the Borgata Fall Poker Open ended with a final table that seemed more like a home game than one with a lot of money on the line. In the end, it's Dave Meagher (Monkton, MD) who edged out Charles Furey (2nd), Goran Kojic (3rd) and Alex Faynkikh (4th) for the top prize of $34,19.
"It was an easy going tournament for me," said Meagher who also earned a coveted Borgata trophy, "not a lot of volatility with my chips throughout the day."
As Meagher celebrated the win, 18th place finisher Alexander Gentile (Bohemie, NY) offered his congratulations. "Glad to see you put my chips to good use," laughed Gentile, who was knocked out by a four flush.
"I had my coat on and one foot out the door," said Meagher who had KT against Gentile's AK and used the K♥ to hit his flush. "There was a lot of volatility on that hand," added Meagher, "but the rest of the day was pretty smooth."
The big pot propelled Meagher to the final table where he edged the other three players. Runner-up
Furey had the most bounties with 12, which added $1,200 to his payday.
The early chip leader was Faynkikh, a mechanics shop owner who plays poker when he can. He maintained a big stack most of the day and was happy with fourth place. "It was a good time, a blast," he said.
And Meagher echoed the sentiment. "It feels good," said the software engineer, whose previous best Borgata finish was second place in the 2011 Borgata Winter Poker Open. Meacher was runner-up to Steve Dannenmann (Severn, MD) for $21,000 in a $350 entry event.
The tournament began with 373 entries that produced $130,550 of total buy-ins. Recognizable names that made the money included Travis Greenawalt (15th), Ken Silberstein (17th) and Sam Taylor (35th) as the top 36 cashed.
This tournament was a consolation prize of sorts, as many players entered after busting from the $1,000,000 Guaranteed opening event. "Not cashing (in Event 1) was a blessing," said Meagher, who picked $1,000 worth of bounties, "it allowed me to play in this one."
